You can usually rely on the supermarkets to start a price war around a popular DVD, usually around christmas time. However it appears as though Asda and Tesco are offering a half-term bonus – both of them vying for our business by offering the hottest title of the year to date for only £8.00. These offers dont usually last long though so you better be quick.

Well its the week the kids have been waiting for. Not only are they off school (well mine are anyway, feels like they’ve just gone back after christmas!), but this week sees the release of High School Musical 3 on DVD. This time the High School Gang are facing graduation but they still find the time to sing and dance about it. Ashley Tisdale, one of the stars of HSM3 also stars in ‘Picture This’, which I’m told is about a mobile phone, a party and popular people in school. Also released is ‘Whitechapel’, a 3 part drama surrounding the investigation into a modern day Jack the Ripper in London’s East End. ‘Righteous Kill’, is a Robert De Niro and Al Pacino Vehicle, about a couple of grizzled detectives who team up to track down another Serial Killer. Apart from the cast its not much to write home about. Scifi is represented with the Release of ‘Mutant Chronicles’, set 700 years into the future on a post apocalyptic Earth with the last remnants of mankind battling against mutant hordes.
Anyway, Heres the pick of this weeks releases and their current best prices:

The Latest Resident Evil DVD, released just last month, has taken a price beating this weekend. Now available for around the £8 mark from at least 3 online stores, namely HMV, Amazon & Play. I guess the departure from the usual Hollywood interpretation hasnt proven as popular over here as it has been in Japan. Resident Evil: Degeneration represents a return to the roots of the series and by all accounts watching it is very much like playing the video game for 90 minutes. Set in the same universe as the Video Games themselves, the story in Resident Evil: Degeneration picks up 1 year after the events of Resident Evil 4 and features familiar characters Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield as they them battle more Zombie Hordes after another outbreak of the T-Virus.

Currently onto his 7th bad day, Jack Bauer returns in this prelude to the latest series currently airing on Sky. This time Jack is hiding out in Africa, with an old friend, played by Robert Carlyle As usual though things go pear shaped for Jack and within minutes he is battling for his freedom while trying to guide a group of orphans to safety amidst a backdrop of political uprising. This 2 hour special marks a return to form for the franchise after a somewhat over the top season 6 and sets the stage nicely for the the 7th day.

Taken Sees Liam Neeson taking on anyone with a foreign accent in an effort to seek revenge for the kidnapping of his daughter, while a couple of kids movies get released, ready for the upcoming half term break in the form of Open Season 2 and Sidney White.

Loosely based on the comic book miniseries of the same by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones, WANTED, directed by Timur Bekmambetov, follows anxiety-prone office drone Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) as he is inducted into the Fraternity, a clan of powerful killers that counted his father as a member. Pursued by rogue agent Cross (Thomas Kretschmann), Wesley is trained by the sleek, sexy Fox (Angelina Jolie) and the charismatic Sloan (Morgan Freeman), among others, to be just as proficient and deadly as his father. Once Wesley becomes a master assassin, he must confront Cross, and contend with the stunning ramifications of that encounter.
Straying rather far from the WANTED comic’s supervillain-centric premise, WANTED runs with the edgy Eastern European aesthetic of Russian helmer Bekmambetov, who garnered international recognition with the stylish vampire epic NIGHT WATCH. While Jolie is a gleefully destructive presence in her action-heavy scenes, the film belongs to McAvoy, who transforms from milquetoast to manhunter with verve and charm. And like the similarly themed THE MATRIX before it, WANTED also showcases some eye-catching special effects, most notably in the loopy concept of ‘curving bullets’. Though devotees of the WANTED comic may be dismayed with the many liberties taken with the story, the movie is undeniably energetic and entertaining, making it fun summer blockbuster fare.
