I get really fed up with the fact that an awful lot of decent stuff - films and TV series - is only available on Region 1, sometimes even of TV series originally produced here. I don't really understand why and I know that a lot of you guys on here buy Region 1 stuff.
A few questions if anyone can answer them therefore:
1. Is it possible to fiddle around with a Region 1 DVD player to make it multi-regional?
2. Are all multi-regional players genuinely just that?
3. And most importantly, is the quality of Region 1 DVDs when played on multi-regionals through a normal British TV up to scratch?

Depends on the DVD player. For most makes it's a simple task of searching the internet for a 'remote hack' that is a code or sequence of buttons to press on the remote that turns a region 2 player into a multi-region player. With other makes (like my Panasonic) you have to get them chipped which is more hassle (you can buy kits off the internet with instructions if you're good at soldering)

Thanks for the offer Chewie! My current DVD player is a Sony and have been told (unreliably maybe) that it isn't possible. We're thinking of getting a new one and it would be good to get any recommendations of a good cheap reliable multi-regional.
Maybe I'll start ordering a few of those regional 1s!

Sorry - another question - on some sites like Amazon they say when you're ordering Region 1 DVDs that you need a multi-regional player PLUS an NTSC compatible TV. What's with the NTSC compatible TV thing? Does that mean you need an American telly!?

No, you dont need an American Telly, Most mordern european TV's are PAL and NTSC compatible, but if you have any doubts it should say in your Tele manual, if you still have it.

Thanks for that - £16 is almost for nothing! It seems easier than trying to hack my Sony, which doesn't seem to respond to any recommended codes from the various web sites. On my surfing travels I came across a BBC article dated 2002, saying that manufacturers were about to give up on the Region fixing idea. Things haven't moved on....

I took up Crazy's suggestion with the offer of a multi-regional from Amazon - it's now £17.99, but still for nothing. It's a nifty little player and thought you'd like to know I got my first Region 1 DVD which it plays perfectly on my rather ancient TV!
